#14 CNU Field Hockey Edges #13 UMW, 2-1, on Wednesday in CAC Action

Fourteenth ranked Christopher Newport University scored a goal in each half to defeat #13 Mary Washington, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 11-4 on the season, and 3-1 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The first half saw the Eagles with the run of play on their offensive end, collecting seven penalty corners, but couldn't find the scoreboard on five shots. The Captains seized momentum with five minutes left in the half, as Rachael Allshouse scored on a Lauren Cheatham assist on a break. The Captains carried the momentum to halftime leading, 1-0.

In the second, UMW couldn't capitalize on several corners, but were able to tie the score at 1-1 on a Jenna Steele goal with ten minutes gone by in the second half, on an assist from Allegra Massey-Elim. The score stayed knotted at 1-1 until Cheatham scored for the Captains with 10:56 remaining in the contest.

The Eagles led in shots, 9-7, and in penalty corners, 13-4. Freshman Jessica Cavolt had five saves in goal for UMW, while Bailey Lien had four saves for CNU.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against rival Salisbury University for Homecoming and Senior Day.
