#15 UMW Field Hockey Tops Wesley, 6-1, in Saturday CAC Action

Senior Jenna Steele scored a pair of goals, and classmate Carlee Budd added a goal and an assist to lead the 15th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 6-1 victory at Wesley College on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles improve to 9-3 on the season, and 2-0 in CAC play.

Steele started the scoring at 11:42, picking up a rebounded shot off a penalty corner, and then gave UMW a 2-0 advantage 10 minutes later, scoring on a Budd asisst. Wesley scored to cut the deficit to 2-1 at halftime.

In the second half, senior Kathleen Namey scored to return the lead to two, less than three minutes into the half, and senior Haley Kane added another just over three minutes later. Sophomore Noor Varjabedian scored ten minutes into the half on an Allegra Massey-Elim assist, and Budd score two minutes later to cap the scoring.

Mary Washington led in shots, 43-9, and in penalty corners, 9-7. Jessica Cavolt had two saves, and Caroline Freeman had three for the Eagles in goal, while Kayla Fromal had 26 stops for Wesley.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they visit Dickinson College at 3:30 p.m. in nonconference action.
