#14 UMW Field Hockey Tops Va. Wesleyan, 7-0, on Wednesday Afternoon

Seniors Haley Kane and Jenna Steele each scored a pair of goals to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 7-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 6-2 on the season.

Kane opened the proceedings just 1:39 into the game on an assist from Kathleen Namey. Steele scored five minutes later on a pass from Carlee Budd, and Steele scored again with 18:57 left in the half on a Namey assist. Junior Christine Loehr scored with 16:37 remaining on a Steele pass to give UMW a 4-0 advantage, which they took to halftime.

Sophomore Morgan LaRowe scored unassisted four and a half minutes into the second, and Kane scored on a Namey assist with 26:04 left. Sophomore Erin Kaila capped the scoring with 20:03 remaining.

The Eagles led in shots, 26-3, and in penalty corners, 7-6. Jessica Cavolt had one save in 35 minutes and teamed with Caroline Freeman for the shutout in goal for UMW. Skye Swain had 13 saves for Virginia Wesleyan.

Mary Washington will return to action on Sept. 29 when they visit Messiah College at 7:00 p.m.
