Massey-Elim, Steele Lead #17 UMW Field Hockey Past Centre, 5-0, on Sunday in UMW Classic

Sophomore Allegra Massey-Elim and senior Jenna Steele each scored a pair of goals to lead the 17th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 5-0 victory over Centre College on Sunday in the UMW Classic. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Eagles opened the scoring with 26:45 remaining in the first half on Massey-Elim's first tally, which came unassisted. Less than six minutes later, Steele scored her first tally unassisted to extend the lead to 2-0.

Steele capped the first half scoring on a Kathleen Namey assist with 13:36 left. The goal was her 49th career tally, tying her for second all-time at UMW.

In the second, Massey-Elim scored her second goal of the day, unassisted with 28:50 remaining in the contest. Namey concluded the scoring with 9:38 left.

The Eagles led in shots, 21-9, and in penalty corners, 12-2. Freshman Caroline Freeman made two saves and freshman Jessica Cavolt added four saves in splitting time in goal for the Eagles, while Lena Jewler had 10 saves in goal for Centre.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday when they host Bridgewater College at 7:00 p.m. Following the game, a free concert by Struan Shields and his band will take place in the Anderson Center adjacent to the campus rec turf field where the game will be played.
