Massey-Elim's OT Score Lifts #17 UMW Field Hockey Past DePauw, 2-1, on Saturday

Sophomore Allegra Massey-Elim scored the game winning goal with 2:43 left in the first overtime period to lift the 17th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over DePauw University in a matchup of 2012 final four teams on Saturday in game one of the UMW Classic. The Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, it was the Tigers who scored first, as Paige Berliner scored unassisted with 16:38 remaining in regulation. The Eagles applied late pressure, and after missing a penalty stroke with three minutes left, found the tying goal as Kathleen Namey scored on a Carlee Budd assist with 1:18 left.

Massey-Elim connected on the Eagles' fourth shot of the extra frame, on an assist from freshman Alaina Shivers. In all, the Eagles outshot the Tigers, 25-6, and had 12 penalty corners to six for the visitors.

"We never gave up, and played until the final whistle", said UMW head coach Lindsey Elliott. "We had a lot of missed opportunities, but the girls never quit. We were able to capitalize late on a corner, and played better in the overtime, and were to finish an opportunity."

Freshman Caroline Freeman made three saves in goal for UMW, while Sarah Guenert had 17 stops for DePauw.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., when they host Centre College. DePauw will square off with St. Mary's College, who downed Centre, 1-0 on Saturday, at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
