#14 UMW Field Hockey Falls to CNU, 3-0, in CAC Tourney Semifinal

The 14th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to visiting Christopher Newport University on Wednesday in the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Eagles came out strong, getting off a shot in the first minutes of play, and CNU matched the effort by gaining a penalty corner early on, but neither team could capitalize, and the game remained scoreless throughout much of the first half. UMW goalkeeper Megan McLaghlin made several point-blank saves, and junior Kathleen Namey made a pair of defensive saves to keep the game scoreless, including a knock out of midair midway through the half.

CNU was able to score with 6:34 remaining in the half, as Madison Doss scored off a saved shot. The Captains seized all of the momentum with another goal with just 1:17 remaining in the half, and led, 2-0, at halftime.

The Eagles turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, and outshot CNU, 7-1, in the frame, as the Captains directed their efforts to stopping the Eagle offense. Unfortunately for UMW, CNU scored on its lone shot of the half, as Miranda Hept scored on a Belle Tunstall assist with 11:35 remaining.

The Eagles held a 15-10 advantage in shots, and a 12-3 lead in penalty corners. McLaughlin had four saves for UMW, while Bailey Lien had nine saves for CNU, with Allie Hackbarth adding a defensive save.

The Eagles close the season with a record of 14-5, the fifth straight year the Eagles have won at least 14 games.
