Downie's Hat Trick Leads #16 UMW Field Hockey Past York, 5-3, in Wednesday CAC Action

Senior Christine Downie made her final regular season home game a memorable one with three goals in leading the 16th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 5-3 victory over York College on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 13-3 overall and 4-0 in CAC play.

York started the scoring on a goal from Autumn Mallory on a Beth Patrick assist with 29:28 remaining in the first half. The Eagles answered five minutes later with the tying score, as Kathleen Namey scored on a Haley Kane assist on a penalty corner.

The half ended in an unusual way, as the Eagles took a 2-1 lead with 36 seconds remaining on a Downie score, but the Spartans answered with 21 seconds left to send the game to halftime tied at 2-2.

In the second, the Eagles used Downie's second goal of the day with 23:17 remaining. Once again, York tied the score, with 20:12 left, on Mallory's second tally of the day. Downie scored what proved to be the game winner with 16:51 left, and Jenna Steele added an insurance goal with 3:34 left.

The Eagles led in shots, 24-6, and in penalty corners, 16-2. Megan McLaughlin had three saves in goal for UMW, while Jessica Everett had eight for York.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday, when they visit top-ranked Salisbury University at 1 p.m., with first place in the CAC standings on the line.
