Steele's Four Goals Leads #16 UMW Field Hockey Past Washington & Lee, 5-2

Junior forward Jenna Steele scored four goals to lead the 16th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 5-2 victory at Washington & Lee University on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Va. The Eagles improve to 8-2 on the season.

Steele opened the scoring less than a minute and a half into the contest, scoring unassisted. She scored again unassisted with 10 minutes left in the half to up the lead to 2-0, but the Generals answered with nine minutes left in the half to cut the Eagles' halftime lead to 2-1.

W&L quickly started the second half, tying the score at two with 2:45 elapsed. But Steele scored one minute later to put the Eagles ahead for good, and sophomore Ashlin Jones scored on a Kaitlyn Taliaferro assist with 20 minutes remaining. Steele capped the scoring with her fourth goal of the contest with 14 minutes left.

Mary Washington led in shots, 21-10, and in penalty corners, 7-5. Megan McLaughlin had two saves and Katie Kolobielski one in goal for UMW. Christina Malave had a defensive save for the Eagles. Washington & Lee goalies combined for seven saves.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they host Messiah College at 4:00 p.m.
