Jones' Hat Trick lifts #19 UMW Field Hockey Past Eastern Mennonite, 7-1

Sophomore Ashlin Jones scored three goals to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 7-1 win over Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 7-1 on the season.

Jones opened the scoring less than seven minutes into play, taking a loose ball amidst a crowd in the circle and finding the back of the cage. She upped the Eagle lead to 2-0 with 24:49 left in the half, off an assist from Jenna Steele, taking a pass from across the goal mouth. Junior Carlee Budd scored off a Christine Loehr assist with 17 minutes remaining, and the Eagles held firm for a 3-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, junior Haley Kane scored unassisted seven minutes into play to move the lead to 4-0, and Jones completed her hat trick five minutes later with an unassisted score off the deflection of a saved shot. Loehr scored with 18:23 remaining, and Kane scored on a Steele assist one minute later to cap the Eagle scoring. EMU scored with 17:12 remaining on a goal from Brianna Kaufmann.

The Eagles led in shots, 21-5, and in penalty corners, 19-6. Megan McLaughlin had two saves for UMW, while Budd and Loehr each had defensive saves.

Mary Washington will host Lynchburg College on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
