Steele's Goal Lifts #19 UMW Field Hockey Past #14 Catholic, 1-0

Junior Jenna Steele scored the game's only goal with 22:03 remaining in the second half to lift the 19th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over 14th ranked Catholic University on Wednesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 6-1 on the season, while the Cardinals slip to 4-1.

The first half saw the Eagles gain 14 penalty corners and 10 shots, but the hosts were unable to come up with a score in a crowded circle. In the second, Catholic led in corners, 7-2, but it was a breakaway that meant the difference in the game.

Junior Haley Kane carried the ball toward the circle from near midfield, and found a streaking Steele, who beat one defender and then the goalkeeper for the only goal with 22:03 remaining.

The Eagles led in shots, 13-8, and in corners, 16-10. Sophomore goalie Megan McLaughlin made six saves and junior Carlee Budd had one defensive save for the Eagles, while Analisa Scott had 10 saves for Catholic.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host Eastern Mennonite University at 1:00 p.m.
