#16 UMW Field Hockey Falls to #8 Franklin & Marshall, 4-3, in UMW Classic

The 16th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team held a lead throughout much of the contest, but eighth ranked Franklin and Marshall scored three times in the final 16 minutes to take a 4-3 decision on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles fall to 2-1 on the season.

Junior Carlee Budd opened the scoring for UMW less than two minutes into the game on a penalty corner, and junior Jenna Steele scored seven minutes later on a breakaway to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage, which they carried to halftime.

The Diplomats cut the deficit to 2-1 three minutes into the second half, but senior Christine Downie scored on a redirect from Christine Loehr on a penalty corner to return the Eagles lead to 3-1 with 23 minutes left.

Franklin and Marshall scored with 16 minutes left to cut the deficit to 3-2, again with four minutes to tie the score, and connected on a penalty stroke with 1:41 left for the game winner.

Franklin & Marshall led in shots, 19-8, and in penalty corners, 11-10. Meghan McLaughlin had 13 saves and Kathleen Namey a pair of defensive saves for UMW, while Allie Morey had two saves for F&M.

The Eagles will return to action on Sunday when they host Roanoke College at 3:00 p.m.
