Jones' Goal Leads #16 UMW Field Hockey Past Va. Wesleyan, 1-0

Sophomore Ashlin Jones scored the game's lone goal three minutes into the second half, as the #16 University of Mary Washington field hockey team blanked Virginia Wesleyan College, 1-0, on Sunday in Virginia Beach. The Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Eagles dominated the flow of the game, but were without a score after a first half in which UMW outshot the Marlins, 13-0. Jones put the Eagles on the scoreboard with 2:22 elapsed into the second half, taking an assist from junior Kathleen Namey.

In all, the Eagles outshot the Marlins, 20-2, and led in penalty corners, 26-2. Va Wesleyan goalkeeper Lindsay Baker had 13 saves, and the Marlins added a defensive save, while UMW's Megan McLaughlin did not make a save in the shutout.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Thursday when they visit Randolph-Macon College at 4:00 p.m.
