Guinn's Five Goals Leads #16 UMW Field Hockey to 16-0 Win Over Ferrum

Junior Nicole Guinn scored a school-record five goals, as the 16th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team scored a school-record 16 goals in defeating Ferrum College on Saturday in Virginia Beach. The Eagles move to 1-0 on the year.

Guinn breaks the school mark for goals in a game with five, breaking the previous mark of four held by seven players. She also added one assist on a penalty corner. Senior Christine Downie scored twice and added three assists, and freshman Morgan LaRowe added two for the Eagles, while Christina Malave, Heidi Schmidt, Noor Varjabedian, Haley Kane, Kathleen namey, Jenna Steele, and Ashlin Jones each scored one goal.

The Eagles led in shots, 52-2, and in penalty corners, 20-1. Freshman Katie Kolobielski didn;t make a save in the first half, and sophomore Megan McLaughlin had two stops in the second half in gaining the combined shutout. Ferrum's Alexis Atkinson and Courtney Gosslin combined for 17 saves for the Panthers.

Mary Washington will return to action on Sunday when they face Virginia Wesleyan College at 3:00 p.m.
