Budd Lifts #12 UMW Field Hockey Past Wesley, 4-2

Sophomore Carlee Budd scored a pair of goals and assisted on another to lead the 12th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 4-2 win at Wesley College on Wednesday night. The Eagles improve to 14-1 overall and 3-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

Wesley jumped out to the early lead on a score from Madison Leone at 9:22, but the Eagles responded with Budd scoring three minutes later off a corner from Haley Kane. Budd scored again 12 minutes later to give the Eagles the lead. Senior Caitlin Baker closed the half with a goal in the last minute off another penalty corner, with Budd assisting.

In the second half, Wesley cut the deficit to 3-2 with 12 minutes remaining, but the Eagles answered 41 seconds later, as Kane scored on a Kathleen Namey assist to push the final score to 4-2.

The Eagles led in shots, 20-5, and in corners, 12-3. Emily Badis made two saves in goal for UMW, who will host Frostburg State University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. as part of Homecoming.
