Sophomore Haley Kane scored the eventual game winner 1:26 into the second half as the ninth-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team defeated Johns Hopkins University, 3-1, in Baltimore on Wednesday. The Eagles improve to 12-0 on the season, including a 9-0 mark away from the Battleground.

The Eagles scored first, as sophomore Carlee Budd scored on a penalty corner assisted by freshman Christine Loehr with 21:36 remaining in the first half. The Blue Jays tied the score 4:30 later, as Maddie Fryer scored her sixth goal of the season.

In the second, Kane scored her 10th goal of the year on a Jenna Steele assist with 33:34 remaining. Sophomore Nicole Guinn added an insurance score with 15:45 left, collecting a saved shot off the stick of Steele to push the lead to 3-1.

"We played well in the second half", said UMW head coach Lindsey Elliott. "We just need to put two halves together. I believe we have a few areas to improve upon before we get (back) into conference play."

"We all stepped up in the second half and had great small passing and movement thoughout the field", said Kane. "We played together, and next game we need to focus on doing that throughout the entire game."

The Eagles led in shots, 22-13, and in penalty corners, 10-3. Junior Emily Badis had four saves and sophomore Kathleen Namey added a defensive save for the Eagles, while Zoey Attabeck had 12 stopd for Johns Hopkins.

The Eagles will visit St. Mary's College in Capital Athletic Conference action next Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
