Steele's Goal leads #8 UMW Field Hockey Past #13 Catholic, 1-0

Sophomore Jenna Steele scored the game's lone goal with nine minutes left in the first half, as the eighth-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team defeated #13 Catholic University, 1-0, on Tuesday night in Washington, D.C. The Eagles improve to 9-0 on the season.

In a game where the host Cardinals held a 19-5 shot advantage, it was Steele who found the cage for the only score of the night. Catholic also led in penalty corners, 9-4.

Junior goalie Emily Badis made a career-high 15 saves in recording the shutout for the Eagles. Megan Comunale had four saves for CUA.

"A very defensive-oriented effort", said head coach Lindsey Elliott. "The defense really stepped up and played a great game. I couldnt have asked Emily (Badis) to do a better job, and coming off an injury, I couldn't have asked more from her."

"We worked really well together on defense, clearing the ball from the circle", said Badis. "I think it shows we can beat other nationally ranked teams and win with our defense as well as our offense."

The Eagles will be idle until next Wednesday, when they visit 16th ranked Lynchburg College at 6:00 p.m.
