Baker Leads #6 UMW Field Hockey to 7-1 Win Over Randolph-Macon

Senior midfielder Caitlin Baker scored a pair of goals and assisted on two others to lead the sixth-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 7-1 victory over Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 5-0 on the year.

Baker opened the scoring ten minutes into play, connecting on a cross from Christine Downie to give the Eagles an early advantage. With 12 minutes left, freshman Ashlin Jones scored on a Jenna Steele pass to up the lead to 2-0, and sophomore Kathleen Namey scored off a penalty corner two minutes to extend the lead to 3-0, which was the score at halftime.

In the second half, neither team scored for 20 minutes, but then the offense returned. Baker scored with 15 minutes left, taking the ball from the defensive half of the field, through the Yellow Jacket defenders, and ripped a successful shot into goal.

Jones scored her second goal of the game two minutes later off another Steele pass to push the lead to 5-0. Randolph-Macon scored with 7:06 left on a Lauren Seal goal, but UMW answered with tallies from Courtney Rampey with 5:43 remaining, on a cross from Baker that was redirected by Haley Kane, and again with 4:13 left on a goal from Nicole Guinn on another Baker feed.

The Eagles led in shots, 38-11, and in corners, 15-5. Emily Badis had five saves in goal for the Eagles, with Maura Flynn adding a defensive save. Steph Talley had 18 saves for Randolph-Macon, with Megan McGowan and Olivia Newman making defensive saves for RMC.

Mary Washington will return to action on Thursday night when they visit Washington (Md.) College at 7:00 p.m.
