Four different players scored twice to lead the sixth ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 13-1 win over Hendrix College on Sunday in Memphis. In the process, the Eagles tied the school record with 13 goals in the contest.
"Today's game was a well played team effort", said UMW head coach Lindsey Elliott. "The girls worked well and we were able to give some of the new players an opportunity to play and they did a great job. It was a great opening weekend for us and we really enjoyed our time in Memphis."
UMW raced out to a 7-0 first half cushion. Freshman Ashlin Jones opened the scoring just under five minutes into play, and senior midfielder Caitlin Baker upped the lead to 2-0 five minutes later. Sophomore Nicole Guinn scored on a Jenna Steele assist with 16 minutes left in the half, and Steele scored less than a minute later to push the lead to 4-0.
Steele scored her fifth goal of the weekend 1:37 later, and sophomore Haley Kane scored twice in the closing minutes, the first on a Jenna Nojaim assist, giving the Eagles a seven-goal lead at intermission.
In the second half, sophomore Carlee Budd opened the scoring off a penalty corner, with assists to Kathleen Namey and Christine Loehr, who scored with 22 minutes remaining to run the lead to 9-0.
Junior Christine Downie scored with 16 minutes left, and sophomore Hunter Causey scored with 11 minutes remaining. Baker and Guinn each scored in the final minutes for UMW.
"Our experience in Tennessee was really incredible", said Kane. "We really bonded and grew together on the field and off... We need to continue to grow and form a strong bond that will allow us to accomplish all that we want to this season. And I know we can do it."
The Eagles led in shots, 50-5, and junior goalkeeper Emily Badis recorded 63 minutes of shutout play without recording a save. Freshman Megan McLaughlin allowed one score in seven minutes of relief.
Mary Washington will be back in action on Thursday afternoon when they host Washington & Lee University at 4:00 p.m.
