Steele's First Half Hat Trick Leads #6 UMW Field Hockey Past Rhodes, 6-0

Sophomore Jenna Steele scored the first three goals of the game, all in the first half, to lead the sixth-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 6-0 victory at Rhodes College on Saturday in Memphis.

Steele opened the scoring with 25:17 remaining in the first half, and added another goal with 7:12 left. She capped the first half scoring with 2:48 left on the clock, giving UMW a 3-0 cushion at intermission.

In the second half, freshman Ashlin Jones scored her first collegiate goal with 9:04 left in the game, and then senior Caitlin Baker scored with 1:44 remaining. Sophomore Haley Kane scored the game's final goal with 12 seconds left.

"It was a good first win for us", said head coach Lindsey Elliott. "We were able to see what we are doing well and what we need to improve on. Jenna did a great job finishing one on one and we were able to have several players score in the second half."

"It was a great way to start our season", said Steele, the reigning CAC Rookie of the Year. "It was an all around team effort. we're all excited to keep playing together and looking forward to another great season."

UMW led in shots, 28-20, with 21 of their 28 shots on goal. Junior Emily Badis made five saves in goal for Mary Washington.

The Eagles (1-0) will take on Hendrix College on Sunday at 10:00 am in Memphis.
