UMW Field Hockey Falls to Montclair State in NCAA Tournament Semifinals

Second-ranked Motclair State University jumped out to an early 3-0 halftime advantage and held on for a 4-0 victory over third ranked University of Mary Washington in the national semifinals of the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament on Saturday afternoon in Geneva, N.Y. The Eagles' season comes to an end with a 20-2 record.

The Red Dragons opened the scoring in the 16th minute on a penalty stroke from Stephanie Lewis, and Montclair State scored again in the next minute on a tally from Brooke Hullings. As the Eagles began to regain their composure, Montclair took all of the wind out of the Eagles' sails as Lewis scored again with one minute left in the first half to give the Red Hawks a 3-0 advantage to halftime.

Mary Washington answered the bell for the second half, and outshot Montclair St. in the second frame, but did add another insuarnce goal in the Frances Schaefer in the 52nd minute. Montclair led in shots in the contest, 16-8, while UMW held an 11-8 advantage in penalty corners.

Senior Claire Gianelle made six saves and senior Lisa Charney added a defensive save for the Eagles, while Megan Bosland had three saves for Montclair State.

The loss draws to a close one of the top seasons in school history, as the Eagles went 20-2, advancing to the national semifinals and gaining the Capital Athletic Conference championship.
