Senior Lisa Charney scored a pair of goals to lead the third-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Eastern University on Saturday morning in the second round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament. The Eagles advance to the third round on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Battleground.
For the third straight game, UMW fell behind, as Eastern scored at 18:30 on a goal by Kinsey Lewis. UMW tied the score ten minutes later on a goal by Charney, and the score stood tied at one at halftime.
In the second, the Eagles took over, outshooting Eastern, 12-4, and netting goals from a Charney penalty stroke at 41:22 and an Amy Abernathy goal on a Caitlin Baker assist at 61:20.
In all, UMW led in shots, 28-12, and in penalty corners, 17-11. Senior goalkeeper Claire Gianelle had seven saves for Mary Washington, while Kylie Jones had eight saves and Sarah Webb added a defensive save for Eastern.
The Eagles will face Lynchburg College on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the winner of that contest advancing to the NCAA Division III final four. Lynchburg defeated Messiah College, 2-0, at the Battleground Saturday afternoon.
