Three Seniors Score Goals on Senior Day to Propel #5 UMW Field Hockey Past Wesley, 4-1

All three senior field players scored goals to propel the fifth-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 4-1 win over Wesley College on Saturday for Homecoming at the Battleground. UMW improves to 16-1 on the season, and clinches the top seed and a bye in next week's Capital Athletic Conference tournament.

Senior Amy Stevens opened the scoring for UMW less than 10 minutes into the game, scoring on a Caitlin Baker assist. Wesley tied the score just before halftime on a Madison Leone penalty corner score.

In the second, senior Lisa Charney scored 12 minutes into play to give the Eagles the lead, and UMW added lkate goals from Florence George with 2:32 remaining on a Nicole Guinn assist and from Baker with 31 seconds left on a pass from Charney.

Mary Washington led in shots, 36-5, and in penalty corners, 14-4. Senior goalie Claire Gianelle had three saves for the Eagles, who win the CAC regular season title for the second time in three years.

The Eagles will host a CAC Tournament Semifinal opn October 31 against an opponent to be determined.
