Senior midfielder Florence George scored four goals and assisted on a fifth, as the fifth-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team defeated Eastern Mennonite University, 9-1, on Tuesday at the Battleground. UMW improves to a school-record 11-0 on the season.

George opened the scoring less than three minutes into play on a Jenna Steele assist, and sophomore Amy Abernathy scored with 27 minutes left and 16 minutes left to up the lead to 3-0. Steele closed the first half scoring with 12 minutes left on a Christine Downie assist.

George opened the second half with three straight goals, on assists from Abernathy, Mallory Peebles, and Lisa Charney. Charney scored with 15 minutes left on a Downie pass, and Courtney rampey capped the scoring with four minutes left.

The Eagles led in shots, 36-8, and in penalty corners, 15-5. Senior Claire Gianelle had three saves in a scoreless 55 minutes and Emily Badis had one stop in 15 of relief for UMW. Sam Ferrier had nine saves and Mary Beth Danaher had seven for the Royals.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they visit #13 Christopher Newport University at 1:00 p.m.
