#9 UMW Field Hockey Tops Washington & Lee, 8-1

The ninth-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team saw three underclassmen score two goals each en route to an 8-1 victory at Washington & Lee University on Tuesday in rainy Lexington, Va. The Eagles improve to 7-0 on the season.

Sophomore Amy Abernathy opened the scoring less than four minutes into play, as her point-blank shot on a Jenna Steele assist found the cage. Steele then scored the first of her two goals less than eight minutes into play on a Florence George assist. Freshman Haley Kane scored twice before halftime, on a George penalty corner with 13 minutes remaining, and on a pass from senior Lisa Charney off a corner with 10 minutes left.

Steele opened the second half scoring and upped the lead to 5-0 with a goal off a rebound with 28 minutes remaining, and Abernathy scored again on a rebound less than four minutes later. Charney scored with 18 minutes left to up the lead, and sophomore Courtney rampey capped the Eagles' scoring on a Caitlin Baker pass with 10 minutes left. The Generals scored with 8:30 left to spoil the shutout.

Mary Washington led in shots, 30-7, and in penalty corners, 11-2. Senior Claire Gianelle had two saves without allowing a goal for UMW, while Emily Badis made no saves in relief. Washington & Lee's Megan Axelrod had nine saves.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host York College of Pa. at 1:00 p.m.
