After seventh-ranked Lynchburg College scored the tying goal with 3:00 remaining in regulation, junior midfielder Caitlin Baker answered with the game winner with 1:19 left to propel the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 3-2 win over the Hornets on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 4-0 on the season.

Lynchburg, who had lost to the Eagles early last year as a top-10 ranked team, scored first in this season's showdown, as Lindsay Leonard scored on a Kelli Williams assist less than six minutes into the game. The Eagles answered as senior Lisa Charney scored unassisted five minutes later to tie the score, and Charney scored again less than two minutes later to give UMW the lead at 2-1, which they would carry all the way to the 67th minute.

Lynchburg's Kelsey Link scored unassisted to tie the score at two with exactly three minutes remaining, but Baker provided late heroics in regulation, scoring on a Charney assist with just 1:19 to go to give UMW the win, its fifth over a nationally ranked opponent in the past two years.

"We played a solid 70 minutes and it paid off in the end with the game winning goal from Baker", said UMW head coach Lindsey Elliott. "The players showed true heart and determination."

The Eagles led in shots, 23-14, and had 14 penalty corners to nine for Lynchburg. UMW senior goalie Claire Gianelle had six saves for the Eagles, while Hannah Myers had 10 for the visitors.

Mary Washington will host McDaniel College on Sunday at the Battleground at 2:00 p.m.
