Charney's Hat Trick Leads UMW Field Hockey Past Roanoke, 8-0

Senior midfielder Lisa Charney scored three goals on four shots to pace the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to an 8-0 win over Roanoke College on Tuesday at the Battlegound. Junior Caitlin Baker had three assists and senior Florence George two goals for the 2-0 Eagles.

The Eagles opened the scoring nine minutes into the game, as senior Amy Stevens scored off a deflection near goal. Freshman Jenna Steele scored her first collegiate goal three minutes later on a shot from near the top right of the circle to push the lead to 2-0.

George scored her first goal with 15 minutes remaining on a cross from Baker, and Charney then made a penalty stroke with five minutes left in the first stanza to up the lead to 4-0. George scored on a cross from junior Mallory Peebles one minute later to cap the scoring for the half at 5-0.

In the second, Charney scored after a nice individual move freed her on a penalty corner with 25 minutes remaining, and scored again on a Baker assist nine minutes later. Sophomore Amy Abernathy scored with eight minutes remaining unassisted.

In all, the Eagles led in shots, 26-5, and in penalty corners, 9-4. Senior Claire Gianelle had three saves and freshman Haley Kane had one defensive save for the Eagles, while Darian Shukar had six saves and Candice Fisher had three in goal for Roanoke, with Stacey Bechtel also picking up a defensive save.

The Eagles will return to action on Thursday when they host Bridgewater college at 4:30 p.m.
