Senior Captains Lead UMW Field Hockey to 3-2 Win at #16 Lebanon Valley

Senior midfielder and team captain Florence George scored the eventual game-winning goal and added an assist to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 3-2 win at 16th ranked Lebanon Valley College on Saturday afternoon in both teams' season opener.

The Eagles jumped ahead first, as senior captain Amy Stevens scored with 10 minutes left in the first half, and UMW held a 1-0 lead at intermission. After the Flying Dutchwomen tied the score with a goal 10 minutes into the second half, senior captain Lisa Charney put UMW back ahead five minutes later on a George assist.

George then put the Eagles up 3-1 with her first goal with 17:30 left in the game. LVC scored with 10 minutes left to cut the deficit to one, but could draw no closer.

UMW led in shots, 18-10, and had 11 penalty corners compared to six for the hosts. Senior goalie Claire Gianelle went the distance in goal for UMW, making two saves, and junior Maura Flynn added a defensive save for the Eagles. Chloe Baro had 10 saves for Lebanon Valley.

The win for the Eagles marks the fourth nationally-ranked team that has fallen to UMW in the brief tenure of head coach Lindsey Elliott, as UMW won three games last season over top 20 programs.

Mary Washington will host Roanoke College on Tuesday at 4:00 in the home opener.
