UMW Field Hockey Tops #13 Lynchburg, 3-1, in Elliott's Coaching Debut

Freshman forward Courtney Rampey (Fredericksburg, Va., Courtland) scored a pair of second half goals to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over 13th ranked Lynchburg College on Thursday in Fredericksburg in both teams' season opener. Junior Lisa Charney (Fairfax, Va., Fairfax) also found the cage for the Eagles, who gain a win in the debut of head coach Lindsey Elliott.

UMW fell behind, 1-0, as Lynchburg's Lindsay Leonard scored the game's first goal with eight minutes remaining in the first half. UMW responded five minutes later, as Charney scored her first goal of the season on an assist from junior Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne). The game went to halftime tied at one.

The Eagles were able to take the lead 16 minutes into the second half, as Rampey scored on an assist from senior Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy). Jones' shot off a penalty corner sped toward goal, and Rampey redirected it perfectly into the open cage to give UMW the advantage. With 20 minutes left in the game, Rampey scored again, this time on an assist from senior Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford).

The Eagles led in shots, 18-8, and each team had nine penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) had four saves for the Eagles in gaining the win, while Charney added a defensive save. Lynchburg's Tiffany Frye had seven saves and Nicole Marburger had a defensive save for the Hornets.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host fifth ranked Lebanon Valley College at 2:00 p.m.
