Senior forward Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) scored three goals and added two assists to lead the 18th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 6-2 win at Frostburg State University on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference play. The Eagles improve to 12-4 on the season, and 3-2 in league action.
The Eagles jumped on top early, as Jones and classmate Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford) scored on back-to-back shots 10 minutes into play to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. After Frostburg scored to cut the deficit to 2-1 by halftime, the Eagles responded in the second half, as sophomore Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean) scored less than three minutes into the second half.
Ripley scored again on a Jones assist 15 minutes into the second half to up the lead to 4-1, and Jones scored again with seven minutes remaining to up the lead to 5-1. The Bobcats cut the deficit to 5-2 with three minutes left, but Jones capped the scoring in the final minute at 6-2.
The Eagles led in shots, 50-14, and in corners, 11-3. Freshman goalie Emily Badis (Kennett Square, Pa., Kennett) had seven saves in goal for UMW.
Mary Washington will return to action on Tuesday when they visit St. Mary's College in a CAC battle starting at 4:00 p.m.
