UMW Falls to #2 Sallisbury, 2-1, in CAC Championship

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but saw Salisbury score the game winning goal with six minutes remaining to win the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday in Salisbury, Md. The Eagles see their season close with a record of 12-8.

The Eagles made the most of their only shot attempt in the contest, as junior Emma Jones (Yorktown, Va., York) scored to put UMW ahead with 22:53 remaining in the first half on a penalty corner assisted by Erin Duffy (Fairfax, Va., Robinson) and Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne). The Eagles would hold the lead until two minutes before halftime, when Salisbury's Lauren Correll tied the score unassisted.

The second half remained tied for nearly 30 minutes, before Michelle Rowe scored on a Caitlin Walker assist with 5:58 remaining in the contest to provide the winning tally.

Salisbury outshot the Eagles, 16-1, and had 21 penalty corners to two for the Eagles. Mary Washington junior goalkeeper Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) had seven saves for the Eagles.

Mary Washington closes the season with a record of 12-8. The Eagles won at least 12 games eight times during the 2000s, and in 2009 advanced to the CAC title game for the first time in four years.
