Tait's Scores Lead UMW Field Hockey Past Stevenson, 4-3

Junior midfielder Jackie Tait (Fredericksburg, Va., Stafford) scored the tying and winning goals, with the latter coming in overtime, as the University of Mary Washington field hockey team defeated Stevenson University, 4-3 in overtime, on Saturday in Owings Mills, Md. The Eagles move to 6-3 on the season, and 3-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles got off to a strong start, with Erin Duffy (Fairfax, Va., Robinson) scoring with 28 minutes left in the first half, scoring off a rebound of a goalie save. The Eagles led, 2-0, after Emma Jones (Yorktown, Va., York) scored her eighth goal of the season on a Tait and Florence George assist midway through the half on a penalty corner.

Stevenson stormed out for three goals in the beginning of the second half, but Tait tied the matter at three with an unassisted score with 26 minutes remaining in regulation from the top of the circle. The teams went scoreless through regulation and into overtime, when Tait scored on a Heidi Sheehan assist on a redirected shot in the extra frame.

Mary Washington outshot Stevenson, 22-12, and had nine penalty corners to seven for the Mustangs. Chrissy Bowdren had four saves for UMW, while Kara Zimmerman and Megan Sadowski combined for seven saves for Stevenson.

Mary Washington will visit Washington College in a nonconference game on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
