1995 Mary Washington College Field Hockey Season in Review

With eight seniors in the starting lineup, head coach Dana Hall believed that the '95 Eagles could become one of the strongest teams in school history. That they did, going 12-4 overall against one ofthe nation's more challenging schedules. For the fourth time in five years, MWC received a bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

The Eagles nearly upset eventual NCAA finalist Messiah, losing 3-2 in double overtime on the road in the first round. All four of MWC's losses came to Top-10 teams. MWC shut out 11 teams in '95, and finished with a final national ranking of #8.

Two graduating seniors were named National All-Americans: defender Eliza Huber (Doylestown, PA) and midfielder Carin Gsellman (Reston, VA). Huber was the anchor of the MWC defense (0.49 goals/game allowed). Gsellman was also named the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Player of the Year.

Forward Danielle Oleson (Fredericksburg, VA), MWC's leading scorer and a returning senior, was named Second-Team All-South Region; Huber and Gsellman were First-Team choices. Huber, Gsellman and Oleson were First-Team All-CAC picks. Making the Second Team were three graduating seniors: goalie Stephanie Lowe (San Francisco, CA), forward Meredith Ierley (Manasquan, NJ) and midfielder Tracey King (Fairfax, VA).

Lowe owns virtually all of MWC's goalkeeping records. Ierley tied school records in assists for both season and career. King had a goal and an assist in the Eagles' NCAA first round game. Other starting seniors in '95 were forwards Amy Mann (Williamsburg, VA) and Suzy Chenault (Williamsburg, VA) and defender Katie Burke (Springfield, VA).

MWC does welcome back a strong senior class, including Oleson, Charlotte Cockrell (Silver Spring, MD), Amy Walters (Midlothian, VA) and Gina Pisoni (Great Falls, VA). Angie Saulsbury Gr./ Ridgely, MD) was a starter and an Academic All-American in '95. Top returning sophomores include Rachel Seaborn (Phoenix, MD), Astrid Reurink (Bloemendaal, Netherlands), Melissa Ballance (Millersville, MD), Martine Rutgers (Wassenaar, Netherlands), Ellen Ashton Smith (Richmond, VA), Erin Broome (Virginia Beach, VA), Anne Marie Carullo (Severna Park, MD), Natalie Simpson (Fredericksburg, VA), Julie Alexander (Falls Church, VA) and Aimee Seward (Southampton, NJ).
