1982 Mary Washington College Field Hockey Season in Review

The Mary Washington College field hockey and lacrosse fortunes are pointing upward for the coming seasons, based on the trends begun late in the teams' most recent seasons. Although the field hockey group suffered through a down 2-11 year in 1982, "with each game we played better," field hockey and lacrosse Coach Meg Kintzing said.

The MWC Blue Tide's 2-11 hockey mark in 1982 was one of the lower ebbs in nearly 60 years of field hockey at Mary Washington and followed on the heels of one of the highest, 1981's 15-4 team which recorded 12 consecutive victories and third place finishes in Virginia and Region 2. Still, the current season was not without its highlights.

Increasingly impressive last season play added to two shutouts in the team's two wins, the second a 10-0 romp, to give the year its high notes. While the team suffered through injuries and six one goal losses, the season was a "learning, building experience," Coach Kintzing commented. "A lot of players learned new positions and gained valuable experience for next year," the eighth year coach continued.

"Our season accomplished something. We formed a solid nucleus of experienced players for next year." Returning players Erin McGinty (Alexandria, VA), with four goals, and Sue Lehman (Sykesville, MD) and Sally Jones (Richmond, VA), with three goals apiece, led the team in scoring. Only Jen Baldwin (Virginia Beach, VA), a senior third on MWC's career scoring ladder with 19 goals, graduates from the scoring contingent.
