Late Comeback Stalls in UMW Baseball's Loss to No. 5 Salisbury, 5-4

Despite Ty Lowe's two-run homer in the top of the ninth to draw the Mary Washington baseball team one run away from tying No. 5 Salisbury, the Eagles weren't able to complete a late comeback against the Sea Gulls as they fell 5-4 in Salisbury, Md. on Saturday afternoon.

In Connor Hassan's first career start, the lefty gave the Eagles the start they needed as he yielded three runs in five innings as he tossed 96 total pitches. But the Eagles bats were a tad slow to wake up in Salisbury as they fell behind 3-0 entering the sixth inning.

But the bats finally woke up when UMW scored a pair of runs in the sixth to draw within a run, 3-2. Oliver Martin started the inning off with a single, then Ryan Schwarz followed with a walk. A batter later, Alex Purgason also drew a walk to load the bases with no outs in the frame. After a groundout, the Eagles finally got on the scoreboard as Burke Steifman reached on an error, allowing Purgason and Schwarz to score.

The Sea Gulls extended their lead to three runs again with a run in the seventh and eighth innings, 5-2.

But in the ninth, the Eagles would bring the tying-run to third base, 90-feet away from tying the game. George Rizzo drew a walk to open the inning, which was then followed by Lowe's two-run homer to come within a run, 5-4. A batter later, Bobby Ayscue singled and represented the tying-run. Tommy Martinex bunted Ayscue to second, then Martin moved Ayscue to third with a fly ball to right field. And with two outs in the ninth, AJ Poole drew a walk to put runners on the corners, but Alex Purgason would strike out after battling for seven pitches.

The Eagles are back in action this week with a matchup against Southern Virginia on Tuesday in Fredericksburg, Va.
