UMW Baseball Downs No. 17 Shenandoah, 12-8

Led by three hits apiece from Noah Roots, Ty Lowe, and Alex Purgason, the Mary Washington baseball team (20-8) outlasted No. 17 Shenandoah, 12-8, in Winchester, Va. on Wednesday afternoon as it took its second-straight victory over a ranked foe.

The bats, as they have been for most of the year, stayed hot in the Eagles' second-straight victory as Alex Purgason fifth inning homer gave UMW the lead for good. The scoring, though, began in the first when Bobby Ayscue drove in his first RBI of the day with a bases-loaded walk.

The second featured a pair of Eagles runs scored to go up 3-0 as Burke Steifman's RBI fielder's choice pushed the first run of the inning across, then Ryan Schwarz's RBI single scored the second in.

In the third, however, Shenandoah took a 4-3 lead on a grand slam, but the Hornets lead wouldn't last for long as Purgason's bomb gave the Eagles the lead back in the fifth. But the Hornets would tie it with their second home run of the day in the sixth, but then the Eagles punched back a few more times and would eventually deliver the knock out blow in the later innings.

Ayscue would drive his second run of the game as he reached on a fielder's choice to give the Eagles a 7-6 lead in the seventh, then Oliver Martin would deliver a sac fly to push the lead to two runs, and finally, Steifman worked a walk to drive in the final run of the inning.

The Hornets scored twice more in the seventh to chip into the Eagles' lead, 9-8, but UMW scored three more times to seal the victory as Purgason picked up his final hit of the afternoon on an RBI single, then Ty Lowe helped himself out on the mound with a two-RBI single.

Jackson Beale earned his second win of the season after recording four runs without allowing a run, then Lowe recorded his second save of the season by recording he final seven outs.

The Eagles are back in action this weekend with a home doubleheader against Hamden-Sydney for Senior Day. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
