Marymount Stalls UMW Baseball's Late Comeback Attempt

Marymount Stalls UMW Baseball's Late Comeback Attempt

The Mary Washington baseball team's late comeback attempt was stalled out in the Eagles' 8-6 loss to Marymount in Fredericksburg, Va. on Monday afternoon.

The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with Noah Roots' RBI single, but then fell behind by two runs in the second inning. UMW's starter Gabe Delgado fared well in his four innings of work, allowing two runs, while striking out three.

But the Eagles then fell down by five runs after a four-run sixth from Marymount, before scoring one of their own in the bottom of the seventh, 6-2, on Cooper Fulton's single that scored Roots.

In the eighth, the Saints added another run before the Eagles struck back for four in the bottom half.

Ryan Schwarz got the inning started with a line-drive single that nipped off of the shortstop's glove, then Jacob Christenbury and Noah Roots walked. And, finally, the Eagles got the big base hit they needed as Ty Lowe doubled all three runners home to cut the lead to two, 7-5. Then, Lowe scored on an errant pick-off attempt at first base to push the score to 7-6.

In the ninth, though, the Saints struck for one more run to run their lead to two, 8-6, and that's where the score stayed once the Eagles went down in the ninth.

Mary Washington is back in action on Tuesday with a matchup against Penn State-Harrisburg in Fredericksburg, Va. at 3:30 p.m.
