UMW Baseball Outlasted by No. 19 Christopher Newport

The Mary Washington baseball team fell at No. 19 Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va., 9-5, on Saturday afternoon to fall to 18-7 overall and 1-1 in Coast-to-Coast Conference play.

The Eagles fell behind by two runs in the second, but got one back in the third with Jacob Christenbury's RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1.

Then, in the bottom of the third, the Captains scored two runs, then added on with five more in the fifth, knocking Eagles' starter Justin Ritz out after four innings.

Jamie Kotula was effecive in relief, however, stabalizing the bullpen with four innings of one-run ball, giving the Eagles a chance to come back in the late innings.

UMW fought back in the late frames as it scored a run in the sxith on Ty Lowe's sac fly, then another in the eighth on Noah Roots' first home run of the season.

Then the Eagles scored two more in the ninth to draw a little closer as Ryan Schwarz drove in a run with an RBI base hit, then on a throwing error by CNU's second baseman allowed for the second run to score.

The Eagles are back in action later this week with two home games -- one against Marymount on Monday (4:00 p.m.) and on Tuesday against Penn St.-Harrisburg (3:30 p.m.).
