UMW Baseball Falls to Randolph-Macon Late, 10-6

The Mary Washington baseball team led throughout Friday's matchup with Randolph-Macon but couldn't close it out in a 10-6 loss to the Yellow Jackets in Fredericksburg, Va.

The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third inning as they got the scoring started with Bobby Ayscue's RBI single, then Oliver Martin's RBI single a few pitches later.

Then, Ryan Schwarz jumped all over a pitch to smoke a three-run homer to push UMW's lead to 5-0. UMW would then score once more on Ayscue's RBI double in the seventh to push the lead to 6-0.

Justin Ritz, through seven, was nearly untouchable as he struck out nine, allowing five hits and no runs. But in the eighth, after Ritz yielded a pair of singles, the wheels began to fall off as the Yellow Jackets scored 10 unanswered runs to go up 10-6 in the eighth.

And that's where the final score would stay as the final out as recorded.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they open conference play with No. 5 Salisbury at 2 p.m.
