UMW Baseball Tops #15 Randolph-Macon, 6-5, on Thursday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington baseball team used a four run third inning and two-run fourth, and solid pitching made those rallies stand up in a 6-5 victory over #15 Randolph-Macon College on Thursday afternoon at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 10-5 on the season.

The Yellow Jackets jumped ahead with two runs in the first and another in the second. The Eagles rallied in the third, as Mike Dennis led off with a walk and moved to second on a single from Cooper Fulton. Xavier Herring singled home Dennis, Jacob Christenbury walked, and Jonathan Sedmak followed with a two-run single to right field. Ty Lowe followed with a sacrifice fly to deep center field to give the Eagles 4-3 lead.

After the Yellow Jackets tied the score in the fourth, UMW scored two of their own in the bottom of the frame. Burke Steifman posted a one-out single, stole second, and advanced to third on an infield single from Fulton. An errant pickoff throw sent Steifman home and Fulton all the way to third, and Herring followed with an RBI single.

Randolph-Macon cut the deficit to 6-5 in the eighth, but the Eagles held on for a scoreless ninth for the win. Herring, Sedmak, Steifman, and Fulton each had two hits to lead the offense.

Sophomore Griffin Graham gained the win in relief, allowing one hit in two innings, with a walk and a strikeout. Starter Justin Ritz pitched four innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits, with three walks and two strikeouts. Lowe gained the save, allowing one eanred run on four hits in two innings, with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, when they host Rutgers Camden for an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
