UMW Baseball Drops Two at #28 Christopher Newport on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a pair of Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference games at 28th ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday in Newport News, Va. UMW fell in the opener, 4-3, and dropped game two, 4-2. The Eagles slip to 16-19 on the season.

In the first game, the home team scored three runs in the first inning, but the Eagles rallied to tie the score with one run in the second and two in the fifth. UMW scored in the second, as Jacob Christenbury singled with the bases loaded. In the fifth, Luke Guerzon drove in a run with a groundout, and Burke Steifman added an RBI single.

The Captains scored one in the seventh on a sacrifice fly for the eventual game winner. Bobby Ayscue led the Eagles with three singles, while Jonathan Sedmak and Burke STeifman each had two hits. Alex Kobersteen took the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits in eight innings, allowing four walks and striking out three.

In the second game, the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Xavier Herring and Owen Reilly hit back to back doubles, and Herring scored on a wild pitch before Reilly scored on an RBI groundout from Ty Lowe.

CNU scored one in the first, two in the third, and one in the eighth. Norman Holcomb led UMW with three hits, while Herring, Reilly, and Steifman all doubled. Brendan McComber took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in six innings, with six walks and two strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action next Saturday when they host Salisbury University for a noon doubleheader.
