Virginia Lottery Presents On This Date: 2005 Baseball Tops #22 York With Walkoff

Virginia Lottery presents today's "On This Date" feature in UMW Athletics history. On March 30, 2005, 11th ranked Mary Washington topped 22nd ranked York College of PA, 7-6, with an exciting walkoff victory.

Both teams scored a pair of runs in the first inning, and the game continued to go back and forth, as York scored one in the fifth and the Eagles countered with two. The Spartans scored once in the sixth to tie the game, but UMW went back ahead in the seventh with a pair of runs. Single runs from York in the eighth and ninth once again tied the score, but the Eagles gained the win in the bottom of the ninth, as Chris Anderson singled and stole second, and scored on a game-winning RBI single from Ray Moore.

Moore and Mike O'Donnell each had a single and double, while Mike Murphy singled and tripled. Eric Fitzgerald, Lee Rubin, and Chase Townsend each had two hits.

Keivn Foeman gained the win, scattering nine hits and three earned runs in nine innings, with two walks and six strikeouts.

The Eagles would go on to win 11 of their next 12 games, finishing as the first team in Capital Athletic Conference history to finish the regular season and tournament undefeated, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, finishing with a 27-10 record.
