UMW Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader with Juniata

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped the opener of its Sunday twinbill with Juniata College on Sunday, falling, 12-6, but rebounded in game two to defeat the Eagles, 6-4. UMW moves to 9-6 on the season.

Mary Washington jumped ahead with five runs in the second inning of game one. Alex Purgason started the rally with a one-out double, and scored on a Xavier Herring single. Jacob Christenbury and Bobby Ayscue both walked to load the bases, and Burke Steifman followed with a two-run double. Sam Freeborne followed with another two-run double.

Juniata scored seven runs in the third, although only on earned. UMW cut the deficit to 7-6 in the fifth, as Ty Lowe doubled and scored on a Jonathan Sedmak single, but UMW would draw no closer.

Justin Ritz took the tough luck loss for UMW, as he scattered seven hits in four innings, with one earned run, three walks, and eight strikeouts.

In the second game, sophomore Alex Kobersteen went the distance, scattering nine hits and three earned runs, as UMW topped Juniata, 6-4. 

Juniata scored a pair of runs in the second inning to take the lead, but UMW answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. Ty Lowe reached on an error and scored on a Jonathan Sedmak single, and Sedmak scored on a fielder's choice.

UMW forged ahead with three in the third. With the bases loaded, Lowe provided an RBI groundout, and Sedmak followed with a two-run single. UMW added another in the fifth on a double steal, with Lowe plating the run.

Sedmak had all three of the Eagles' hits in game two. Kobersteen improved to 2-0, walking four and striking out seven.

UMW will be back in action on Monday, as the Eagles host FDU-Florham at 3:00 p.m.
