UMW Baseball Tops CNU in Game One in C2C Tourney; Moves to Winner-Take-All Final Game

The University of Mary Washington baseball team defeated Christopher Newport University, 7-5, in the opening game of the final series of pod play in the Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday in Newport News, Va. The Eagles improve to 11-16 on the year, and moved to a winner-take-all deciding game against the Captains, with a bid to next weekend's championship series on the line.

In the first, UMW jumped ahead as Norman Holcomb doubled and Bobby Aysue walked, before Garrett Lyons' bunt attempt was thrown away, leading to a run. CNU tied the score with a run in the second, and the game stayed at 1-1 until the seventh inning. UMW went ahead as Noah Roots tripled and Alex Purgason added an RBI single. The Captains took the lead with three runs in the seventh,  but UMW scored five of the game's last six runs.

The Eagles scored three in the eighth, as Jonathan Sedmak hit a two-run double and Sam Freeborne followed with a sacrifice fly. After the Captains tied the score with a run in the eighth, UMW plated two in the ninth, as Ty Lowe's two-run double turned out to be the winning runs. CNU hit into a game-ending double play. 

Holcomb had a single and doubl and Roots singled and tripled for the Eagles. Jamie Kotula gained the win with 1.2 innings of relief, allowing no runs on two hits, with no walks or strikeouts. Ty Lowe pitched great as the starter, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in seven innings, with two walks and five strikeouts.
