UMW Baseball Falls to CNU, 14-8, in Second Game of C2C Tourney

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 14-8 decision at Christopher Newport University on Friday evening in Newport News, Va., in their second game of the day at the Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. The Eagles will face the Captains again on Saturday at 11 a.m., needing to win two games to advance to the championship round.

The Eagles started swiftly on Friday, scoring a run in the top of the first inning, as Caleb McAlister, Bobby Ayscue, and Garrett Lyons connected for consecutive singles. CNU tied the score in the second with a home run, but UMW went back ahead with a run in the third. Ayscue and Lyons walked before Ty Lowe drove in Ayscue with a single.

From there, the Captains scored 13 straight runs, with four in the fourth, eight in the fifth, and one in the sixth. The Eagles rallied for six runs in the eighth, as Luke Guezon doubled, Noah Roots singled, and Chris Rubano singled to load the bases. Alex Purgason singled home a run before Andrew Gearhart walked with the bases full to bring in another run. A wild pitch brought home to score Rubano, and pinch hitter Nick Bass added a two-run single. Parker Wilburn then scored on a wild pitch to cap the scoring.

McAlister, Lyons, Purgason, and Rubano each had two hits for UMW. Brendan McComber took the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings, with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Eagles and Captains will play again on Saturday, with the Eagles needing to win two to advance to next weekend's championship series.
