UMW Baseball Tops Southern Va., 8-3, to Claim Third Seed in C2C Tournament

The University of Mary Washington baseball team defeated Southern Virginia University, 8-3, on Tuesday at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium in the regular season finale. UMW, 9-15 on the season, gains the third seed in this weekend's Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Eagles, who threw eight pitchers, scored in every inning but the fifth. In the first, Caleb McAlister singled, stole second, and scored on a throwing error. In the second, Noah Roots singled, stole second, and scored on a triple from Owen Reilly. The third saw the Eagles score a pair, as Jonathan Sedmak and Garrett Lyons each singled. Sedmak scored on a throwing error, and Nick Ciuffreda plated Lyons from second base with a sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, Roots tripled and scored on a Reilly single. In the sixth, Bobby Ayscue doubled and scored on a Reilly single. The seventh saw Lyons and Ty Lowe single, advance on a double steal, and Lyons come home on a Sam Freeborne sacrifice fly. In the eighth, Norman Holcomb's RBI double scored Chris Rubano.

Reilly had two singles, a triple, and three RBI to lead the Eagles, while Roots singled and tripled and Lyons added two singles. Brendan McComber gained the win in the "staff game", as the Eagles scored in the bottom of the first and never relinquished the lead, allowing no runs or hits with one walk allowed.

The Eagles will face St. Mary's College in the first game of the C2C Tournament on Friday at Christopher Newport University at 9:00 AM.
