18-Hit Outburst, Biggs' CG Lead UMW Baseball Past York, 16-6, in CAC Tourney

The University of Mary Washington baseball team erupted for 16 runs on 18 hits, and senior Hank Biggs pitched a complete game to lead the Eagles past York College of Pa., 16-6, in game one of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday in Newport News, Va. The Eagles, winners of four straight, will face Christopher Newport University at 4 p.m.

After falling behind, 1-0, in the first, the Eagles tied the score in the second as Norman Holcomb reached on an error and scored on a fielder's choice. The Eagles grabbed the lead with one in the third, as Christian Hague connected for a solo home run. 

The Eagles busted the game open in the fourth, with seven runs. After Holcomb walked and Marcel Barrett singled, the Spartans committed an error on a bunt to plate Holcomb. David Lambertson followed with a single to score Barrett. Stephen Johnston followed with a grand slam, and, after a pitching change, Christian Hague doubled and Kevin France singled before Holcomb singled to plate the seventh run of the frame.

UMW added a pair in the fifth, as Josnton singled, Tyler Ray tripled, and Hague hit a sacrifice fly. York scored one in the fifth, but the Eagles tacked on two more in the sixth. Barrett walked and Garrett Lyons singled, both runners moved up a base on an error, and both came around to score on a Lambertson single.

York scored three in the sixth, but the Eagles added three in the eighth, as Barrett tripled and scored on a single from Lyons, who scored on another hit from Lambertson, who scored on a double from Ray.

Hague finished a triple shy of the cycle, with a single, double, and home run, while Barrett and Lambertson each had three hits. Ray doubled and tripled, and Johnston singled and homered, driving in four with the grand slam. Lambertson also posted four RBI.

Hank Biggs gained the complete game victory, surpassing 100 season innings pitched in the ninth inning, allowing six runs on 12 hits, with four walks and eight strikeouts.

The Eagles will face Christopher Newport at 4 p.m.
