UMW Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against St. Mary’s on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept their doubleheader against St. Mary's College on Saturday at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles won the first game 12-6 and then took the second game 4-1. UMW improve to 13-20 overall, and 6-14 in the CAC.

In the first game, the Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the second inning. Norman Holcomb led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. David Lambertson doubled to center field to score Holcomb and then Stephen Johnston singled him home. Tyler Ray helped himself out on the mound as he singled home Marcel Barrett to make it 3-0. Christian Hague capped off the inning with a single to right field to score Johnston. 

St. Mary's came back in the third inning as they tied the game up 4-4. UMW ran away with the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as they brought across five runs. Barrett led off the inning with a double, and then Johnston singled him home. After a Ray walk, Hague singled home Johnston from second to make it 6-4. Kevin France then came up and hit a three-run home run to extend the Eagles lead to 9-4. Barrett added to his day with a solo home run in the fifth inning. 

UMW added two more runs in the seventh inning to make the score 12-4. Barrett singled to lead off and then Chris Rubano reached on a fielder's choice. Johnston doubled home Rubano and Ray helped himself out again as he cranked a double to right field to score Johnston. The Seahawks tried to make a run at it in the ninth as they scored two runs but the Eagles shut them down from there to win the game. 

Ray got the win as he pitched 7.0 innings, giving up four earned runs, and striking out four batters. 

In the second game, St. Mary's hit a leadoff homer to take an early 1-0 lead. From there, the Seahawks bats were shut down as they recorded just three hits the rest of the game. Hank Biggs earned the win as he pitched five innings, giving up one earned run, and striking out three batters. Cole Gabrielle earned the save as he pitched four shutout innings in relief, striking out four batters. 

The Eagles tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the first as Ray singled to center and France then singled to left to put two runners on base. Holcomb hit a timely double to bring home Ray. UMW took the lead in the third inning as Hague doubled to left and then was brought home by Holcomb. They added another run in the fourth inning as Barrett created it on the base paths. Barrett singled and then stole second base, before moving to third base on a past ball. Johnston grounded out to bring hime home and put UMW up 3-1. 

UMW added an insurance run in the eighth inning for good measure. France led off with a double to left field, and then Garrett Lyons singled to left field to bring hime home. Gabrielle closed the door in the ninth to help the Eagles secure the sweep.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday as they will host St. Mary's at 12 p.m.
