Ninth Inning Rally Lifts UMW Baseball Past Bridgewater, 6-3, on Thursday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team used a five-run ninth inning to defeat Bridgewater College, 6-3, on Thursday afternoon in Bridgewater, Va. The Eagles improve to 11-16 on the season.

UMW jumped on top with a run in the first inning, as senior Tyler Ray singled, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored on a single from David Lambertson. Both pitchers started throwing zeroes from there, and the score stayed at 1-0 until the seventh. Bridgewater plated three runs on three hits with a walk mixed in.

Mary Washington rallied in the ninth, however, scoring five times. Ray led off with a double, and scored on a single from Christian Hague. After Hague advanced on a passed ball, Garrett Lyons tied the score with a double to right field. Lyons went to third on the throw, after interference was called as he collided with a fielder in a run down. After Nick Bass walked to put runners on the corners, Norman Holcomb singled in the go ahead run, and Kevin France followed with a two-run double to cap the scoring.

Ray and Lyons each had a single and double, and Hague a pair of singles for the Eagles. Cole Gabriele pitched a complete game in victory, allowing three runs on eight hits, with two walks and six strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Friday, as they visit York College of PA in Capital Athletic Conference action, with first pitch being moved to 1 p.m. to hopefully avoid storms later in the day.
