UMW Baseball Sweeps Frostburg in CAC Doubleheader

The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader from Frostburg State University on Saturday to improve to 9-12 on the season and 3-7 in league play. UMW won game one, 12-4, before claiming game two, 11-7, in 11 innings.

In the opener, senior pitcher Hank Biggs continued his dominant week, scattering three earned runs on 10 hits in 7.1 innings of work for his second win of the week. He walked three and struck out seven batters.

The Eagles jumped ahead after little offense early on, erupting for six runs in the fourth inning to grab a 6-0 lead. Christian Hague tripled to lead off the inning, and scored on a Norman Holcomb single. After the bases were loaded, Holcomb scored on a sacrifice fly from Kevin France. Garrett Lyons reached on a fielder's choice to score another run, and Nick Bass scored on a wild pitch before Tyler Ray drove in a pair of runs with a single.

UMW put the game away with a four-run sixth inning. France, Lyons, and Johnston each hit consecutive doubles, and Holcomb singled to drive home another run. Marcel Barrett's infield single added the fourth run of the frame. Barrett's two-run single to left field in the eighth capped the scoring.

Hague and Holcomb each had three hits for UMW, while Johnston, Ray, and Barrett each had two.

The second game saw the teams battle back and forth, with the score being tied at 5-5 through three innings. After Frostburg scored in the sixth, UMW knotted the score in the ninth, and the Eagles plated five runs in the 11th for the victory.

Ray, Barrett, and Bass each had two hits for the Eagles, with Johnston adding a double and Lyons a triple.

Johnston gained the win in relief, allowing one run on three hits in five innings, walking three and striking out two.

The Eagles will host Methodist University on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
