UMW Baseball Blanks Averett, 8-0, on Wednesday Behind Biggs' Gem, Johnston's Bat

Senior pitcher Hank Biggs threw seven scoreless innings and senior Stephen Johnston had five hits including a home run to lead the University of Mary Washington baseball team to an 8-0 victory at Averett University on Wednesday in Danville, Va. 

The Eagles started quickly, as Garrett Lyons and Stephen Johnston each singled and advanced with stolen bases. Tyler Ray provided an RBI single to get the Eagles on the board. The Eagles added another run in the second, as Lyons doubled, stole third, and scored on a Johnston single.

The Eagles broke the game open in the fourth with four runs on four hits. Nick Bass led off with a walk and Kevin France followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position, and Johnston drove in both runners with another single. Another run came around on an outfield error, and Ray added another RBI with a double. 

Johnston added to his stellar day with a home run in the sixth, and UMW capped the scoring in the eighth as Christian Hague added a home run. Johnston was 5-6 on the day with four RBI, including the home run, and Hague went 3-4 with two RBI. 

Biggs allowed three hits in seven innings with two walks and four strikeouts. Johnston came in for two innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits and fanning one.

The Eagles will host Frostburg State University on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader.
